How to clean stairs.

Carpeted stairs can soon get grubby from pet hair and dirt, so it’s important to keep this part of the home spotless.

As you probably know by now, I like the good old fashioned way to clean so I prefer to use a stiff brush and to sweep my stairs. I then hoover up the dust when I get to the bottom.

Cleaning stairs with a brush is much harder than hoovering the staircase, but I think it gives better results.

When brushing the stairs use a small dustpan to collect the grime from each step and get rid of the dust and dirt immediately before it gets spilt.

  • Start at the top of the staircase and work your way down.
  • Brush or dry vacuum the back of the step, then brush the tread, then lastly brush each side of the stair.
  • If you are using a vacuum cleaner you will need to change the attachments to get into the hard to reach areas of each step.
  • Continue with each stair until you reach the bottom step.
  • Spot clean any marks or stains with carpet shampoo.
  • Allow some time for the dust to settle.
  • Using a feather duster dust the bannisters and skirting boards of the stairs, I like to use this special glove for getting in between all the nooks and crannies! you can check it out in this video!
  • Wipe down any windowsills and picture frames that dwell on the stairs.
  • Using a bowl of soapy water clean the handrail and any painted areas of the stairs such as the skirting boards or bannister railings.
  • Vacuum or brush the stairs every 3-4 days to keep the carpets clean. A clean carpet makes the whole house look and feel cleaner.
  • Once a year consider getting a professional carpet cleaning service to clean your hall landing and stair carpets.
