Do you wake up feeling optimistic and looking forward to the day ahead?
Do you think that you can achieve your personal goals no matter what the day ahead brings?
Do you look for ways to fill your day with gratitude?
Or do you wake up with a feeling of impending doom, anxious and worried about how much you need to get done or whether you will be able to keep up?
Does the day crowd in even before you’ve opened your eyes?
Do you wish you could start over?
In this post, I will give you one simple, one-second skill to help you reboot your life every morning so you can be the best version of yourself.
Why change your lifestyle?
Knowing when to change your life doesn’t come easily for most people as life has become so busy.
Many people start their day reaching for their phones, diving into their inboxes, the news, or social media. They do this before they’re even fully awake.
They’re already moving into the stress and the demands of the day before they have fully woken up. This has a negative impact on the rest of their day before it has even begun.
Can you relate to this problem? Does this mean you never feel in control of your day?
Is everything happening around you making you unaware of how you are feeling?
Are you becoming numb to the demands and noise of life? Have you lost sight of your core values? Do you feel like something is missing?
Sometimes we don’t know what we need from one moment to the next. Or how to hit the reset button on our lives and meet these needs.
Research shows that people who start their days slowly and mindfully, checking in with themselves before moving into their busy days, tend to be healthier and happier. They tend to be more peaceful; they have lower stress levels. They make better choices for themselves and others, so their relationships are better. They sleep more deeply and have more energy for life and living.
How does gratitude help to reset your life?
Taking time to pause in our day and resetting life for just one second can help us realize what is truly important in our lives and help us focus on what we should be grateful for, like our health, home, and family. Gratitude for these important things can often get lost in the quagmire of pressure and stress we wallow in daily.
How to reset your life
Habits can be hard to break, especially with technology, but restarting your life doesn’t have to be difficult, and it doesn’t have to be a complicated procedure like sitting in the lotus position for 30 minutes trying to empty your mind. I have a skill step that will help you reset your life, it only takes a second of your day, and you can do it anywhere: On the bus, in the coffee queue, while feeding the baby, literally anywhere!
This tiny little step in your day is one of the simplest but most effective things you can do for personal development. I’m not promising you a new life, but I promise that pausing for one second every day helps you care for yourself and your wellbeing.
This simple one-breath meditation, following and noticing your breath, is a powerful way to calm yourself down if you’re stressed and overwhelmed, but it also helps you connect with the present and how you feel right now. So often we can find ourselves ruminating, getting caught up in the past, or worrying about the future and what may or may not happen.
It doesn’t matter where you are. You can stop and try it right now. This is how you do it.
- Start by resetting your day every morning.
Close your eyes and relax your face.
Relax the space between your eyes.
Soften the space between your shoulders.
Relax your body.
Relax any areas of tightness.
- Take one deep breath every morning before reaching for your phone.
Take one deep breath before you open your eyes in the morning, before you reach for your phone, and before you move into your day. Simply take one deep breath in and one breath out, notice, and listen. It’s such a simple deep breath in, with a nonresistant exhalation.
- Notice this one single breath.
Become aware of your breathing. Feel how much air your lungs can hold. Feel how wonderful and refreshed you feel after taking in the huge big breath.
- Notice how you feel
How am I feeling right now?
Ask yourself, what do I need right now?
What do I need right now at this moment?
What do I need to do to make myself happy today?
Check in with yourself about the tone of your mind, feelings, and day.
- Think about what you need.
When doing this exercise, you might not know how you feel or what you need. This might take some time if you have become used to ignoring your feelings and needs.
Re-setting life wherever you are
Maybe you can take this practice with you as you go about your day, you can use the one second reset at the coffee machine , before you throw yourself into your inbox, before you enter your home and meet whatever demands you might find there. Just simply deep breathe, checking in with your mind, checking in with your body before you move to action.

Many Tibetan monasteries and Buddhist temples offer retreats where you can go and practice meditation, chanting and reset your life. This would be my first choicewhen wondering how to reset my life if I didn’t have kids. Visiting a Tibetan monastery and living life as a monk, even for just a week, seems like bliss to me.
