10 Places You Need To Visit When Camping In Anglesey

 If you’re planning on going camping in Anglesey, then you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we will give you some fantastic ideas of fun-filled things to do, and as we can’t entirely rely on the great British weather, we will give you some fantastic ideas of things to do if it rains!

There‘s nothing better than spending quality time with the kids, getting down in the sand and having some well-deserved family time. It takes you a million miles away from the humdrum of school runs, social media and work, and it allows you to connect again with your little ones on a completely natural level. Camping can be a fabulous way to connect with nature and have some great outdoor adventures. 

Where Is Anglesey?

Anglesey is an island situated off the north coast of Wales. The island is famous for its vast stretches of golden sandy beaches, clear sea,  historical buildings and lighthouses. Anglesey is 276  square miles and has a population of 69800 people, and it’s a place of outstanding natural beauty. The island connected to the mainland by the Menai suspension bridge and the Britannia bridge.

There are many fantastic places to visit in Anglesey and many incredible historical points of interest. It has many beautiful coastal walks if you like to get out in the fresh air.

If you’re thinking of camping in Anglesey, be prepared to take a raincoat as well as sun cream, as the Anglesey weather can be very changeable and the wind can be quite strong.  Don’t forget to pack wellies for the kids to jump in the rock pools!

Beaumaris

Beaumaris is a small town steeped in history, situated at the eastern entrance to the Menai Strait, it is home to Beaumaris Castle and Beaumaris Gaol. There is plenty to do in Beaumaris especially if you have kids. Many places in Beaumaris are also dog-friendly.

One of the best campsites in Anglesey is Kingsbridge Caravan park situated just outside Beaumaris.  Static caravans, motorhomes, tents and a touring caravan are welcome. They are a dog-friendly campsite too. The campsite is situated quite away from the main road so it is very tranquil at night. The owners of the campsite make sure that the guests are respectful of each other, which makes this the perfect place for camping with the family.

•  The Toilet block is modern, clean and spacious. There are plenty of toilet cubicles, three immaculate and spacious shower cubicles, two large private cubicles with sinks, hairdryers, and a large baby changing area, and its a great place to have a hot shower!
• Wifi is available in some regions of the campsite, but it does not reach the whole campsite so some pitches may not have Wifi coverage.
• Water and electric hook up is available and is charged per pitch.
• There is a small shop situated on the site and a small  Playground for the kids to play.

If you’re looking for accommodation to rent in Beaumaris look no further than Chimney Corner situated on the high street. It is a grade two listed building right on the beach with stunning views of Snowdonia. It boasts of eight bedrooms, four bathrooms, a sauna, a pool table,  games room,   a fully equipt kitchen. Some of the rooms overlook the stunning views of the beach. The house is situated right in the centre of Beaumaris, so it is convenient for local restaurants, pubs, shops and parks and is only a few yards away from the pier if you fancy a stroll. The house sleeps 16 (small groups welcome) and has a conservatory and BBQ area. It truly is the perfect place to stay!

If you’re looking for things to do Beaumaris has a lot to offer! From historical points of interest, parks, and lighthouses there is always something to do!

Beaumaris Castle

Beaumaris Castle has an entry fee of £20 for a family ticket. I assumed this was going to be a pretty run of the mill historical attraction, however, I was very pleasantly surprised with everything this castle had to offer!  The castle its self is pretty amazing, but the backstory is even more curious! The castle was commissioned by King Edward the 1st  in 1295 during his campaign to conquer North Wales. It was deemed to be the most opulent castle in Wales,  however, halfway through, work stopped on the castle due to lack of funding and has remained incomplete ever since.

When we visited the castle they were performing re-enactments of the era, the actors were very knowledgeable about the history of the era and were very happy pass on their historical knowledge, they also put on a small show which my kids loved. You can also walk right around the top of the castle walls if you’re feeling brave! There is a little gift shop inside the castle too. My kids loved this day out and wanted to visit again during our stay!

Beaumaris Gaol

Beaumaris gaol is situated just off the high street. It really is a  hidden gem and is definitely, worth a visit, my kids loved seeing what it would be like to be a prisoner all those years ago and enjoyed pretending to be locked up!

Parks in Beaumaris

There are a couple of lovely parks for children of all ages at the castle. With a putting green, bouncy castle,  and a  café. There are also some picnic benches for outdoor eating. There is a third smaller park situated at the pier.

Beaumaris Pier

Beaumaris pier is the perfect place to sit and take in the stunning Snowdonia views, it has ample seating and is great for crabbing with the kids ( please remember to put the crabs back in the sea !) Make sure to take a cardigan as it gets very windy on the pier! Situated next to the pier is a shallow swimming pool/ boating pool perfect for the kids to paddle in!

Shopping in Beaumaris

There are some stunning little shops in Beaumaris including Fat Face, a Spar and some fantastic independent shops too. One of my favourite shops is the artist Janet Bell’s gallery, it is packed to the rafters with the most stunning artwork from Janet bell, all depicting local scenery. I find it impossible to leave her shop without adding to my collection of her beautiful paintings.

Places To Eat In Beaumaris

One of my favourite places to get a take away in Beaumaris is Neptune’s chippy.  Situated on the high street, they serve delicious chips every time to take away or eat in the café,  the staff are super friendly, and they are great with the kids.

The Midland restaurant is situated on the high street and has friendly staff. It’s a  great place to go for an evening meal out,  they serve delicious Tapas food, including tasty vegetarian options. The desserts are exquisite, so be sure to give them a try!  It does get quite busy, so booking is recommended.

The red boat ice cream parlour is situated on the high street and is by far the best place to buy ice cream. The staff are amiable, the ice-cream is delicious, and they have a variety of unusual flavours, including a hazelnut soy option. There is a place to sit inside and eat your ice-cream, but it does get quite busy, a better option is to eat it while having a stroll along the pier but watch out for the seagulls as they are fearless!

The Liverpool Arms Hotel is situated on the high street. It is a child-friendly pub,  which serves a delicious Sunday carvery. We were looked by Sarah, who squeezed us in after we had been let down by another restaurant. Sarah went out of her way to accommodate us even though it was a busy August bank holiday Sunday and we had kids with us.  All the staff were amicable, pleasant and happy. The carvery was delicious, and the menu was packed full of delicious home-cooked food, with fabulous vegetarian options. It’s a place I will return to time and time again. Booking is recommended.

Benllech

When you’re camping in Anglesey with kids, one of the biggest priorities is to find a child-friendly beach and Benllech certainly wins in that department! The beach in Benllech is a vast sprawling area of fine golden sand and rock pools. When the tide goes out, the water is very shallow, which makes it a very safe beach for the kids to paddle and swim. There are free toilets at the beach, but they stink, please also be prepared and take some loo roll in with you!

There are benches to eat your picnic, a small shop and an ice cream place. There is a Tesco, Spar, Pharmacy and chip shop. The beach does get a lot busier than other beaches in Anglesey at peak season.

Situated nearby is Rhos Caravan Park in Red Wharf Bay at Pentraeth, which offer static and touring caravan pitches.

Rhosneigr

Rhosneigr is a quaint little village situated on the Anglesey coastal path in the south-west of Anglesey near Holyhead.  Rhosneigr beach is a vast expanse of golden sands sprinkled with a few rock pools. The Rhosneigr weather makes it the perfect place for windsurfing and kitesurfing and canoeing.

• Silver Bay, this is a favourite beach for surfing. It is a dog-friendly beach.
• Broad beach, a popular place for surfing and canoeing with a long expanse of beach and dunes. Perfect for a picnic and relaxing.
• Porth Nobla, this is a quiet rural beach offering clean sand and peace if you’re looking to get away from it all.
• Traeth Crigyll is situated about a mile away from the north beach, and it is a quiet place for contemplation, it can get quite windy, so remember to pack a windbreak!
• Porth Ty’n Tywyn, with beautiful Dunes and plenty of sandy beach, this is one of my favourite places to go with the kids.
• Cable Bay is a small cove great for bodyboarding, kayaking and surfing; this is one of our favourite little coves to visit and has parking right next to the beach.

The Oyster Catcher Rhosneigr

If you’re looking for an amazing place to eat or somewhere to relax with a drink, it’s worth visiting The Oyster Catcher situated in the sandy dunes of Rhosneigr. The vegetarian options are fantastic. The views from the Oyster Catcher, make it the perfect place to sit outside with a delicious rhubarb gin and tonic. It is only a few minutes walk from the beach if you feel like walking off your lunch!

Campsites In Rhosneigr

In Rhosneigr, quite a few camping sites are situated quite close to the beach, which makes it the perfect place to stay.

Plas caravan park is one of the best dog-friendly static caravan sites in Anglesey. It is immaculately kept and idyllically quiet, making it the perfect place to start your holiday. This is one of my favourite caravan sites in Anglesey.

If you’re looking to pitch a tent, camper or tourer then head over to Ty Hen holiday park, which is a family run site situated approximately 10 minutes walk from Rhosneigr Beach, it is one of the best dog-friendly campsites in Anglesey.

Shoreside Caravan and camping park is another of the small campsites on Anglesey situated a few minutes walk from the beach and next to the golf course. They also welcome dogs free of charge.

Bod Fan campsite, this is a small, friendly, family-run, dog-friendly campsite situated near all the local amenities.

Scarlett’s fish and chip shop on the high street serves up the best fish and chips for miles, and is situated next to Rhosneigr beach, the perfect place to eat out!

Trearddur Bay

Treardurr bay is a small village on the north-west coast of Anglesey home to some of the most beautiful coves and stretches of beach including LLigwy beach and Dafarn rhos caravan park. One of our favourite places to visit near Treardurr Bay is South Stacks lighthouse.

Best Beaches In Anglesey

Anglesey prides its self on having some of the most beautiful beaches in the UK, with vast open spaces of clean golden sand and beautifully clear water. You will find most Anglesey campsites near the beach or just a few minutes walk away. Anglesey beaches are perfect for watersports, rock pooling or paddling, and the sand is ideal for the kids to play on. Camping in Anglesey is like no other place in the UK; the beaches are what makes it so unique and idyllic.

Places To Visit in Anglesey  

If you’re looking for some adventure while you’re camping in Anglesey, there are plenty of places to visit nearby for the thrill-seekers in the family!

Zip world

Visit Zip World for some amazing woodland, mountain and underground adventures.

The Tree Tops adventure course is 7 metres high with 22 different elements and 12 zip wires, consisting of 2 courses. It takes approx an hour to get around the trails, and my kids loved it. It was challenging, but great fun as the kids felt a  sense of achievement when overcoming the different challenges. And it was especially great for my very hyper 6-year-old.  The minimum age is five years old, and the under 7’s need to be accompanied by an adult around the course.

Along with the tree toppers, you can have a go on Europe’s highest five seater swing, Skyride, which swings up to 80 foot in the air, this will cost you £10 for a 30-minute duration.

 Your little ones could also have a go on the treetop nets which are huge nets suspended 60 foot up in the trees for them to bounce and run in a treetop adventure. The price for the treetop nets is £13 for a 2-hour duration. There is also the Forrest coaster which is like a cross between a roller coaster and a bobsleigh.

If you’re feeling brave you should have a go on the fastest zip wire in the world, situated at Penrhyn Quarry in Bethesda near Bangor. Where you’ll fly over the bright blue water of the quarry lake! It really will take your breath away! be sure to call beforehand to check availability.

Snowdon Mountain Railway

What better way to see the views of Snowdonia than from the summit of Snowdonia! Ride to the summit of Snowdon on the Snowdon Mountain Railway. You’ll find refreshments and a gift shop at the summit.

Let your kids go wild in this underground slate cavern with an adventure  course of walkways , trampolines tunnels and slides suspended underground! Why not have a go yourself!

Where To See Puffins In Anglesey

During the month of June Anglesey becomes the home to breeding puffins. you can see puffins at Puffin Island situated approximately 4 miles from Beaumaris. There are Puffin Island boat trips from Beaumaris which allow you to do some puffin watching from the boat, or you can sit at Penmon Point beach and puffin watch through your binoculars. The best time to visit Puffin Island is mid-June when the puffins are breeding. Penmon priory is just down the road too.

South Stack is also a great place to see puffins in Anglesey and you can climb the 140 steps to the top of the lighthouse for a better view! There is an RSPB visitor centre at South Stack where you can use their equipment for puffin spotting. this is the perfect day out for the whole family when camping in Anglesey, and one of our family’s favourite places to visit.

Other things to do when you’re camping in Anglesey with kids.

• Rock pooling, get your wellies on and get rock pooling with the kids  

• Body boarding, great fun for all the family 

• Windsurfing enjoy the beautiful backdrop of Rhosneigr beach while you windsurf away! 

• Rhosneigr, get up in the air with the windy Anglesey weather on the beaches of Rhosneigr.  

• Crabbing, be kind and return the crabs back to their home please! 

• Kite flying the windy Anglesey weather makes it the perfect place for kite flying with the little ones and there is plenty of room to run about on the vast expanses of golden Rhosneigr beaches. 

• Horse riding, with a local horse riding centre in Anglesey you are surrounded by beautiful scenery, perfect for having a hack with the kids! 
• Bird watching. South Stacks RSPB reserve has a fabulous coastal walk which makes it perfect for spotting puffins, razorbills and guillemots. If you climb the lighthouse you may be able to see Porpoise, Seals and Dolphins if you’re lucky!
• Stone skimming. Penmon beach is the perfect place to find stones to skim!
• Puffin watching and seal spotting.
• Dingle Nature Reserve, the perfect place to have a picnic and do some twitching!
• Anglesey sea zoo, your kids will learn about the best of British marine life and marine conservation at this marine education centre.
• Slate caverns, get on the quarry explorer for an off-road adventure!
• Cemaes Bay. Situated on the north coast of Anglesey and part-owned by the National Trust, it is the most northerly village in Wales.
• Glamping if you’re not into camping you could book yourself into the local glamping site and spend a night in a luxurious bell tent!
